What is agent-first?
Agent-first is the belief, built into software, that your website should be your AI's job and not yours. The definition, the test, and how AgentBuild applies it.
Just about every major website builder now has AI in it. Wix will draft your site from a conversation. Squarespace will generate your pages. ChatGPT Sites, in public beta on eligible paid ChatGPT plans, will publish one for you straight from chat. If you only read headlines, these all sound like the same product. They aren't, and the difference comes down to one question: where does the AI live?
In most of them, the AI lives inside the tool. It sits inside the editor and makes the editor faster, and when it's done helping, the editor is still yours to drive. The dashboard is still the destination; the AI is a very good assistant standing next to it. That's dashboard-first, and for people who like their editor it's a real improvement.
Agent-first is the other way around. The AI doesn't live in the tool. The AI is the operator, and the platform is built for it: every site operation available as a tool call, every change previewed, no site editor or site dashboard anywhere. You talk to the ChatGPT or Claude you already use. Your AI talks to the platform. The website happens.
The test, in plain words
We published a definition with three criteria, and they work on any product: every site operation works as a tool call your AI can complete (if you have to finish the job in an admin panel, the dashboard is still the product); any compatible authorized agent can operate the site, ChatGPT today or Claude tomorrow; and your chat is the site-management interface, where you approve what goes live and never have to finish a job in an editor or admin panel. We built the receipt into the product
Here's how AgentBuild applies those principles, and the part we're proudest of. Our dashboard has no editor in it. None. It handles billing, your account, support, and connecting your AI, and that's the whole job. We didn't hide the site tools behind a login; they don't exist as human tools at all. The domain connection, the email routing, the content, the design system, the previews, the publishing, the forms, the analytics: all of it was built as an API for an agent before any of it was a screen. And the domain stays registered to you at your registrar, so the same website can be operated from ChatGPT today and Claude tomorrow. Your agent can change. Your website doesn't have to.
That wasn't a marketing decision. It came from a belief about where the work should live. A restaurant owner shouldn't need to log into a website editor to update tonight's specials. A contractor shouldn't need to log in to add a service area. The editor era gave that work a nicer editor; it never took the work off the owner's hands. The work gets lighter when your AI can carry it end to end, with you keeping the approvals and none of the operating.
What agent-first is not
It is not autopilot. Nothing goes live without you: every change produces a preview, and you say yes or no in the same chat. The AI does the work; you keep the final say.
It is not a chat feature inside one AI product. A chat-native site publisher can be genuinely useful, but as of August 2026 a Site built that way exposes no public API or agent surface, so agents outside that one product cannot operate it today. Agent-first treats continuity across agents as part of the definition.
And code generation alone is not agent-first. Tools like Lovable and Bolt have the AI write you an app, and what you get is exactly that: an app, yours to own and maintain. The disqualifier isn't the code; it's that you end up operating a project. Agent-first means nobody hands you one to keep running.
Questions worth answering straight
Does agent-first mean I lose control of my website?
The opposite. You approve every change before it goes live, your domain stays registered to you at your registrar, and the site doesn't live inside any one AI product. What you lose is the operating: the site-editor login, the canvas, the standing task.
Which AIs work with it?
ChatGPT and Claude today, connected through the same open standard both support. The definition matters more than the list: an agent-first platform is built so that authorized agents as a class can operate it.
Is this just a new name for AI website builders?
